8. Theodora (500-548)

Theodora (500-548) was a highly influential Empress of the Byzantine Empire and a saint of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Married to Emperor Justinian I, she was his most trusted advisor and used him to achieve her purposes. She controlled foreign affairs and legislation, violently put down riots, and, notably, fought for the rights of women, passing anti-trafficking laws and improving divorce proceedings.

Theodora (500-548) était une impératrice très influente de l'empire byzantin et une sainte de l'église orthodoxe orientale. Mariée à l'empereur Justinien Ier, elle était son conseiller le plus fiable et l'utilisait pour atteindre ses objectifs. Elle contrôlait les affaires étrangères et la législation, réprimait violemment les émeutes et luttait notamment pour les droits des femmes, promulguant des lois anti-traite et améliorant les procédures de divorce.
